3 Signs You Need To Replace Your Steering Column

by Gwendolyn Anderson

The steering column is an integral part of a car's overall function. When there is a problem with the steering column, operating the vehicle can be challenging, and quite risky. Make sure you know how to recognize the signs that signal the need for a steering column replacement.

1. Tilt Limitations

The steering column should allow you to move the steering wheel up and down without any resistance. For example, if your spouse drove the car earlier and lowered the wheel, but you need it to rest higher, you should be able to move the wheel with ease.

If the wheel keeps getting stuck, this is an indication that you've got a problem on your hands. If the steering wheel won't tilt correctly, the problem makes for an uncomfortable driving experience. Additionally, if the steering wheel will tilt but not lock into place, this issue is also concerning.

2. Unusual Sounds

When you move your steering wheel, you should not hear much sound. Now, if your car is on the older side, it's not unheard of to hear a small amount of noise as the parts start to wear. However, the noise should not be loud. You should also not hear sounds like clunking or clicking.

These types of sounds typically mean that an internal component within the steering column has failed. If the sound is only subtle now, the sound will get louder with time. Additionally, it's only a matter of time before you have even more issues. You should replace the compartment before it ultimately fails.

3. Turning Difficulty

When you're driving, turning the steering wheel should also be an easy process. For example, when you need to make a right turn, you should be able to turn the wheel to the right with ease. If you're noticing resistance, the column may need to be replaced. If you notice this problem, it's essential you address it right away.

If it's hard to turn the steering wheel, in the event you're in an emergency situation where you need to turn quickly, you might not be able to do so. This type of problem is especially dangerous because it increases your risk of an accident.
